Files never leave your browserHow to use it
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Counts update as you type - nothing is submitted.
- Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a common average for adults.
Why it runs in your browser
Most file tools upload your document to a server, process it there and send it back. That means a stranger's machine holds your file, however briefly. This tool does the work locally using JavaScript, so nothing is transmitted. You can check: load the page, turn off your internet, and it still works.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counting runs in your browser as you type and nothing is stored or transmitted. Closing the tab discards it.
How is reading time calculated?
Words divided by 200, a widely used average reading speed for adults reading general text. Technical material is slower, so treat it as a guide.
How are words counted?
Any run of non-space characters counts as one word, which matches how most word processors count. Hyphenated words count as one.
