Why it runs in your browser
Most file tools upload your document to a server, process it there and send it back. That means a stranger's machine holds your file, however briefly. This tool does the work locally using JavaScript, so nothing is transmitted. You can check: load the page, turn off your internet, and it still works.
Frequently asked questions
Does compressing reduce image quality?
Slightly, by design. JPEG compression discards detail the eye is least likely to notice. At 75% most photographs look identical to the original while being a fraction of the size.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression happens in your browser on a canvas element. Nothing is sent anywhere, so private photos stay private.
Why does my PNG come back as a JPG?
JPEG compresses photographs far more effectively than PNG. If you need transparency, keep the PNG - JPEG cannot store a transparent background.
